A welcome reception, symposium dinner, an accompanying persons' program, and post-symposium tours (html, doc, pdf) to Istanbul and Cappadocia will be arranged.


ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE

 

The Tourism Agency, BINTUR, will, on request, meet participants arriving at Izmir (Adnan Menderes) Airport. You must use the Travel Schedule in the Registration Form (html, doc, pdf) to inform the ICHMT Secretariat well in advance about your flight schedule, complete with date and time of your arrival and the name of the airline. Please send the Registration Form, including the registration fee and room charge for the whole duration of your stay, to ICHMT Secretariat before July 1, 2003. BINTUR will provide transportation in air-conditioned, private cars or minibusses between the airport and Cesme Golden Dolphin Hotel. The charge is in US$ per person, one way, and is according to the number of persons in the party (shown in the table below):

Advance payment is not required. The distance is about 80 km (one-hour drive). The only other direct service from the Airport to Cesme Altinyunus Hotel is by taxi, available at all hours, at a cost of approximately US$ 50, one way, for up to 3 persons in daytime (double charge after midnight). Please note that taxis do not have air-conditioning.

 

A representative of BINTUR Travel Agency will be present at the hotel during the symposium.

HALF-DAY IZMIR  (8:00 – 13:00  or  13:00 – 18:00)

 

The Tour includes visits to ancient AGORA, MOUNT PAGUS (once called the ”Crown of Smyrna”), ALEXANDER THE GREAT’S CASTLE (overlooking the city of Izmir, the “Pearl of The Agean Sea”); and ARCHAEOLOGICAL and ETHNNOGRAPHICAL Museums.

 

 

EPHESUS AND MARY’S HOUSE  (8:00 – 19:00)

 

Leave for EPHESUS, the veritable cradle of early Christianity. Visit the SHRINE OF THE VIRGIN MARY where she supposedely spent her later days. Proceed to Ephesus and see the spectacular ruins from the period of St.Paul, some of which have only recently been excavated. See the ODEON, the BOULETERION, FOUNTAINS, the TEMPLES, the BROTHEL, the LIBRARY, the AGORAS, the GREAT THEATRE, the ROMAN BATHS, the GYMNASIUMS. After lunch, visit the ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM, ST. JOHN’S BASALICA and his tomb, and the TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS (one of seven wonders of the ancient world) (lunch included).

 

PERGAMON AND ASCLEPION  (8:00 – 19:00)

 

Drive to PERGAMON. Visit the ACROPOLIS, the TEMPLE OF ATHENA, the famous LIBRARY, the ROYAL PALACES, the TEMPLE OF TROJAN, the steeps THEATRE of the world, the TEMPLE OF DIONYSOS, the ALTAR OF ZEUS (seat of satan), and the view of RED BASILICA (St.JOHN’S CHURCH). Lunch in town. Visit the ETHNOGRAHICAL and ARCHAELOLOGICAL Museums and the ruins of ASCLEPION (medical center of the ancient world) (lunch included)

 

PRIENE, MILETUS, DIDYMA  (8:00 – 19:00)

 

Depart for PRIENE, the POMPEI of Anatolia and the first planned city of ancient world. Visit the THEATRE, the TEMPLE OF ATHENA, the PRYANEUM, the AGORA and the ALTAR OF ZEUS and CYBELE. Proceed  to MILETUS, one of the principal IONIAN citiesand home of THALES which was twice visited by St. Paul. Visit the very well preserved THEATRE, the BYZANTINE FORTRESS, the DELPHINION, The NYMPHANION, the BOULETERION, the FAUSTINA BATHS and the MOSQUE. Then continue to DYDIMA and visit the TEMPLE OF APOLLO with its gigantic columns (Lunch included).

 

HIERAPOLIS  (8:00 – 19:00)

 

Drive to Pamukkale (the cotton castle), one of the most spectacular sites. See the wonderful formations of the travertines and watch the cataracts falling into basins at the bottom of the mountain. Walk around the ancient city HIERAPOLIS, the MONUMENT and THERMAL BATHS. See the architecturalgenius of the THEATRE, the magnificently well preserved NECROPOLIS and the world wide famous “DEVIL’S HOLE”. Year-round swimming possibility in the natural hot spring pool (Lunch included).

ISTANBUL TOUR, 3 NIGHTS

 

DAY 1, 23 August 2003: Tranfer from Cesme to Izmir airport. Fly to Istanbul. Arrival in Istanbul, the only city in the world built on two continents. Transfer to hotel. Free afternoon and overnight in Istanbul.

 

DAY 2, 24 August 2003: Full day Historical Istanbul tour; visit the St.Sophia Museum (built in 6th century, once was the largest Christian Church in the world), the Topkapý Palace (imperial residance of Ottoman Sultans, with displays of priceless World-class collections of artifacts, jewelry and rare porcelain), the Blue Mosque (unique with its 6 minarets, and famous for its blue Iznik tiles), the Hippodrome Square where ancient chariot races were held, and then visit the world famous Grand Covered Bazaar. Overnight in Istanbul.

 

DAY 3, 25 August 2003: Full day Bosphorus and Asia tour; visit the Egyptian Spice Market, and then embark on a Bosphorus Boat tour viewing the beauty of the European and Asian shorelines on either side. After lunch at alocal fish restaurant, cross to the Asian side to visit the Camlica Hill and tour the Beylerbeyi Palace, the summer residence of the Ottoman Sultans with the magnificent gardens. Overnight in Istanbul.

DAY 1, 23 August 2003: Transfer from Cesme to Izmir airport. Fly to Ankara. Transfer to city center. In the morning, visit the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations (which is housed in a restored Caravanserai) and the Mausoleum of Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey. After lunch, proceed to Cappadocia, where nature has scoured moonscape shapes, and the persecuted Christians dug underground cities and churches during the 9th century. Dinner and overnight in Cappadocia.

 

DAY 2, 24 August 2003: Full day touring in Cappadocia; visit Goreme open–air museum with its fairy chimneys and dozens of cave churches decorated with unique frescoes depicting various scenes from the Bible, the Zelve Valley, the natural citadel of Uchisar and the pottery town Avanos. Dinner and overnight in Cappadocia. You may join the optional Turkish night folklore show.

 

DAY 3, 25 August 2003: After breakfast, visit the underground city of Kaymakli (built by the early Christians to evade Roman armies). Then, visit the Agzikarahan Caravanserai, from the Seljuk period, located on the Ancient Silk Road, on the way to Ankara. Transfer to Ankara (Esenboga) airport for late afternoon or evening flight.
